Vision Treatment Program
Vision not Sight Leads the Body and Mind
The title may have confused you, so let me explain…. Sight is simply what our eyes and brain perceive to be around us at any given time. Sight describes how clearly you can see an object, and that is it.
Vision is the term used to describe everything else the eyes and brain do for us that we are completely unaware of until there is a problem. Vision is the much deeper, more sophisticated cousin of sight. When the nerves from our eyes leave the eye socket and start mixing in with each other and the brain, many of those nerve fibers don’t go to the area of the brain that allows us to get a picture of our surroundings. Instead, they go to lots of other areas of the brain that influence balance, posture, emotional state, concentration, and movement, just to name a few! In fact, more than 70% of our brain wiring has input from our vision! Many of the subconscious brain processes that help us live our every day lives are influenced in part by our vision system and we have no idea they are even happening.
Unfortunately, the part of our visual system that is responsible for more than clear vision is not always developed optimally, or has been damaged from disease or injury. Visual skills that move our eyes accurately from one point to another, allow our two eyes to work as a team, keep our vision clear on close objects like books, and make sense of what we see, are developed and learned over time. We are not born with these capabilities, but rather, they are skills that have to be learned and developed starting from inside the womb before you are even born. Studies show that approximately 60% of children that have academic issues also have hidden vision issues that go undiagnosed without the proper type of examination by a behavioral optometrist like Dr. Wise. The good news is that once these problems are uncovered they can be improved, or sometimes completely fixed by the right vision training program. Reading speed and comprehension, the ability to concentrate on important cues when studying or interacting in a classroom environment, and even ADHD type symptoms can be dramatically improved through proper diagnosis and vision training programs.
Most of us have never heard of this under-used medical option, and sadly, many kids go a lifetime struggling to learn and achieve at a high level because of their vision limitations. It’s important to remember that seeing 20/20 is only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to using our eyes effectively. Without a solid, efficient foundation of vision, limitations in academic success, athletic success, and even everyday activities will occur whether we recognize them or not. We have seen many children and young adults beam with pride when they have that first moment of success after struggling through homework and tests. As the grades improve, so does the self esteem and feeling of confidence that they may never have had because they have been told they have a ‘learning disability’, or worse yet, their parents and teachers believe they are just lazy.
Services like professional tutoring are helpful, but if you are trying to build the house without the foundation (efficient and strong vision) then results will be much more limited and money could be wasted.
Vision training is a powerful tool with many applications. It is an effective treatment for many non-learning related vision issues, such as eye turns (strabismus), and lazy eyes (amblyopia). In addition, vision training is very effective at improving inefficient vision skills and poor visual processing. When left untreated, these problems cause poor concentration and the need for more effort to complete an assignment. These under-diagnosed conditions could keep the person from reaching their maximum potential, and in some cases if left untreated, can even limit what professions and careers are even possible for a person to pursue.
Please call us with questions and we would be more than happy to direct you to more information on any of these areas. We are very excited and thankful when we are able to change the entire course of a person’s life through vision training, and look forward to helping many more!
